Hey everyone!

So whether you know me personally, or you’ve recently caught onto this blog (and have observed the pictures) you’ll realize that I now rock a short natural hairdo (or a teenie weenie afro/TWA). For those of you familiar with type 3 and type 4 hair (tightly curled/coiled or kinky), you understand/know that it requires more moisture than naturally straight or loosely waved hair. Without moisture, it becomes brittle and can break easily.

Many people with this texture of hair will also say that it requires quite a bit of time, and patience to condition, detangle, and style. As a matter of fact, the amount of time that it takes to manage this texture of hair is why quite a few people decide to get their hair chemically straightened. I myself used to have a relaxer. My friends also know that when it comes to styling my hair, I’m notoriously lazy. I will be the friend who is forever in a ponytail, or with my hair in a bun. Any elaborate hairstyle or one that takes too much time, is usually an automatic no for me, no matter how beautiful it is.

Now with knowing all that, one would assume that my outlook on how long a hairstyle takes must have changed why I would have decided to go natural. Surely, I must have developed way more patience when it comes to that, right? Wrong!! I am pretty much just as lazy when it comes to my natural hair as I was when it came to relaxed hair. I do tend to wash it much more often though, but only because with natural hair, I can go about my day while it’s still wet. When I was relaxed with hair about mid-back length, wet hair meant it needed to be set it and dried under a hooded dryer, or at the very least blow dryed. I couldn’t just get up, and head on the road looking like a wet cat.

You must be asking yourself, how I get myself to look half decent with all of this hair laziness. Well the answer is simple: the wash-n-go. Truth be told, I have never once sat down to put a full hairstyle in my hair since I’ve been natural. No rod sets, no finger coils, no twist outs, nada. I’m not playing about this cyah badda attitude (cannot bother for my non islanders).

Since I’ve been pretty much committed to styling my hair in the fastest way possible with least effort, I set out on a mission to research how to perfect a simple wash and go. One hair stylist I came across on YouTube was of the opinion that the hair would become easier to manage, as well as to style, if you cowash it everyday or every other day. Cowashing simply means to wash your hair with conditioner. This helps promote extra moisture retention that is needed for hair types such as mine.

I was sharing this newfound information with my mom, while voicing my concerns on how expensive it could end up being to wash my hair everyday. My mom pointed out a very good idea to me though. She told me to get a cheap conditioner that I could use in bulk to do the cowashing. That way, my hair could get all the moisture it needs, without breaking the bank. Great idea mommy!

The next day I set out on a quest to find said conditioner. I’m currently in Jamaica dealing with some health issues, so I was not exactly sure of what I could expect to find. I was almost sure that the cost of the products would be higher, as well as the selection lower in variation than what I would be used to where I live. I was determined to try though nonetheless.

While perusing the aisles of a local pharmacy, I came across a few brands that sold conditioners in 32 ounce bottles. Some of them though, were way past what I intended to spend, given the intended use of the product for me. I compared prices and labels: of products and what they claimed to do, until I eventually settled on one that I didn’t have very high hopes for, but it was cheap enough. That conditioner was Tresemme Curl Hydration.

I also decided to try out a detangler that I’ve heard nothing but good reviews about, the Kinky Kurly Knot Today. The only complaint I’ve ever heard about it was the price. I must say it’s definitely just as expensive in Jamaica as it is in Florida, but I figured it was an investment in the health and manageability of my hair, which would be worth it if it helped.

The bottom line: both these products are AMAZING!!!! I am so impressed I don’t even quite have the words. I’m even more impressed with the Tresemme, simply because I didn’t expect much. The price and the volume compared to the effectiveness is truly a win. The results were almost instant. The ‘slip’ (the ease with which your hair can be combed/detangled/fingers run through) is worth writing home about! I’ve already recommended this to a few of my natural friends and they are also equally impressed.

The Tresemme Conditioner cost me around $865.00 JMD, which is approximately  $7.70 USD while the Kinky Kurly I bought for $2,229.00 JMD, which was around $19.70 USD.
